Elsie Holland leaves home. Leaving only a note, she tells her family that she's run away to become a singer in prohibition era Atlantic City. She meets Doris, a woman with a soft spot for naive runaways, and Francis, a sarcastic, washed-up pianist. Elsie finds success comes quickly but often at a price.
